New plays and musicals are opening in London all the time. This is our choice of the best of the latest.

LONDON NOW (APRIL-MAY)

THE DUCHESS OF MALFI
The Old Vic, The Cut, Waterloo Road, London SE1 8NB T: 0844 871 7628
This is a revival of John Webster's savage Jacobean tale, brought back to life by Jamie Lloyd. A recently widowed Duchess falls in love with a young man called Antonio. Her brothers, desperate for their inheritance, forbid her from remarrying, but she goes against their will and marries Antonio in secret. A twisting tale unfolds full of deceit and sinister action. It is a superb performance from Eve Best as the Italian Duchess.

LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
Apollo, 31 Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1D 7EZ T: 020 7492 9930
David Suchet and Laurie Metcalfe star in Eugene O'Neill's heart-rending story. The drama takes place over the course of one day at the seaside home of the Tyrone's in Connecticut. Moving themes of addiction and dysfunction emerge as family secrets are revealed. It is semi-autobiographical and the audience somehow leaves feeling uplifted rather than left in the turmoil of the decaying family values.
